The factory takes up a building block and demonstrates strong features of collage -of gradual interventions of space. The intervention is based on the promotion of the essence of collage, namely, the co-existence of different morphological elements and not a contemporary unified modernist logic.
The most important aspect of that factory is it’s gradual growth that can be clearly observed in space. The construction of the factory began in 1927 and gradually, during the 50s started evolving significantly, firstly with two stone buildings, and then, during the 60s with concrete buildings with basements.
The organic gradual evolution of the building, that is apparent in the composition of space, is to be maintained after the transformation to an alternative multi-purpose space. It’s evolution lasted for about 40 years. We want the new use to maintain that feeling of time and history of the building, as well as it’s industrial character.
The centre of the multi-purpose space is the courtyard that is the beginning of all interior movement. Around the courtyard in the buildings that surround it, a stream is formed, where the water moves in different heights so that sound is created with the flow of the water. Parallel to the stream there are also plants of Mediterranean origin.
A main reference to the memory of the factory is shown in the construction of the central vertical movement of the ramp. The support of the ramp is achieved by thick and thin strings-threads that are a reference to weaving.
The history of the building in the form of an exhibition, is developing in all the primary movements, accesses from the surrounding streets and the courtyard. May objects from the existing equipment (benches – counters-trolleys for transporting fabric- pulleys- parts of machinery ) will either be used as useful objects e.g. at the restaurant or as “sculptures” in the courtyard or the building.
